Grade 5 ~ Assignment #3

Students are asked to choose any three of the following to be completed at home. All work should be completed by Monday, February 19. Use the school=s digital camera and scanner to have as much material as possible put on-line. Check with Mr. Stacey for an appropriate time to do this. Save your work to your portfolio.

1.  Use an old solid-colour t-shirt and washable markers to draw a picture of your favourite character. You may colour in the front and/or the back of the shirt. These can then be worn during our celebration at the end of the book.

2.  Design a Math code which can be used to send secret messages.

Every letter of the alphabet would be given a different answer and then students would have to solve math problems in order to get the secret message you have written.

    3.  Make a collage of numbers and letters you have cut from magazines, newspapers, or made yourself using string, macaroni, sand, glitter, etc. Display these on a sheet of bristol board. Don=t forget a title for your work.

4.  Make a Memory game by drawing 2 pictures of each of the characters in The Phantom Tollbooth on index cards. Try to have at least 20 different characters, 40 cards in all. Then you and your friends can play Memory by taking turns in choosing cards which are placed face down on the table. The one with the most pairs when all the cards are gone wins.

5.  Write a song or a poem about any character or event in The Phantom Tollbooth. Use the tune from some song that you know. Run off copies for your friends and have a sing-a-long.

6.  Create a word search or a crossword puzzle on the computer about people, places and events in The Phantom Tollbooth. Make copies and challenge your friends to complete the puzzle.

7.  Make a travel brochure for Digitopolis and Dictionopolis. Be sure to include the following:

~ places to see

~ things to do

~ how to get there

~ what to bring

~ how to get around

~ what to avoid

In addition to the information, you should include an attractive cover, several pictures, and contact information.

8.  One of the many phrases that Norton Juster had fun with in this book was in using idioms. Find out what an idiom is by using your dictionary. Then draw pictures to go with the following idioms (or any others you can come up with) and write the idiom used on the back. Have your friends try to guess what idiom is being used by looking at the picture. For example, the idiom AIt=s raining cats and dogs@ could show cats and dogs falling from the sky just like rain.

A. Butterflies in the stomach

B. Don=t count your chickens before they=re hatched.

C. This is for the birds.

D. Dad is in the dog-house.

E. I get to stay up late once in a blue moon.

F. Don=t rock the boat.

9.  Write a short play starring any two characters from the book and 2-3 of your classmates. Choose several of your friends to act out the play for your class.
